In 1839, Black Horse Tavern was purchased to become a Poorhouse. Over time, it was gradually turned into a hospital and then into Eloise Psychiatric Hospital, aka Eloise Asylum and “Crazy Hospital.”
Over the years, Eloise Asylum used lobotomies, hydrotherapy, insulin shock therapy and electroshock therapy like other hospitals of that era. It was criticized for these treatments, severe overcrowding and anonymous burials. There’s a potter’s field cemetery with more than 7,000 nameless graves.
The psychiatric hospital closed in 1979 and all of the medical facilities were closed by 1984. Most of the structures have been demolished. The Key Beard Building is the surviving administration building and operates as a haunted attraction. Per Detroit Free Press and per ClickonDetroit

The haunted walk is a Halloween attraction and is not based on the Eloise Asylum history. Still, knowing the asylum’s history and its spooky ambiance will make Eloise Asylum a unique Halloween haunt. The boundary between the living and the dead tend to blur at the asylum and that will make this an unforgettable experience.
