Gengenbach, Germany is a popular tourist destination, and with good reason. It’s located on the western edge of the Black Forest at the starting point of the Gengenbach–Alpirsbach Black Forest Trail where you can take the pilgrim route (Kinzigtäler Jakobusweg) or the hiking path (Kandelhöhenweg) and pass by many historic landmarks on the way. It’s located at the German Fachwerkstraße, and there are many great museums to visit, a great traditional medieval town centre (or Altstadt), beautiful towers, romantic old homes and even remains from their old defense wall.
There is so much to do year round. If you arrive during Carnival season, you can enjoy the German holiday of Fasnacht, where you can enjoy the annual parade, the great costumes and the carved wooden masks. Gengenbach is also home to the world’s largest advent calendar, where the 24 windows of the town hall will open to display an Advent calendar scene. It was also named by Lonely Planet as one of the best Christmas markets in Europe. There are also other great festivals during the year, so no matter when you go, you are bound to have a great time.
