Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway Review
A few weeks ago, I enjoyed I wonderful trip at the Walt Disney World Resort. You can see my observations from Disney’s newest hotel, the Riviera Resort, here. One of the reasons I chose to take a Disney World trip then was to try Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway. So I thought today I would tell you about my experience with this ride!
I will start with a full disclosure, though. Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway was the ride that replaced the Great Movie Ride at Hollywood Studios. Now, the Great Movie Ride was my favorite ride at Hollywood Studios and maybe even all of Walt Disney World Resort. So it’s possible that that tainted my view of the ride. I tried not to let it, but I just thought I would say that right away. Now onto the review!
Waiting for the Ride
I chose not to get a fastpass and go in the regular line to see what the whole queuing experience was like. I was also curious to see if the line was as long as the wait time implied. Well, turns out it was. The wait time was about 120 minutes and I thought it might be less. Especially because during the wait, it always felt like you were about to get to the ride and then you didn’t. I felt like every time you got the end of the line, suddenly you’d enter a brand new room. And then you’d wait some more! So I definitely recommend getting a fastpass for this attraction.
But I will say this: the queuing area was nice. Especially once you get inside. It was really hot outside. But the inside was still nice the way it was when it was the Great Movie Ride. And I liked the posters and everything.
The best part of the wait, though, is when you watch a Mickey and Minnie short. This is when the wall gets “blown up” and you get to enter the cartoon yourself! You can see this during our video.
The Ride Itself
Okay, so we’re now onto the ride. So what did I think? Honestly, I have mixed feelings about it.
The Good
- I like that the ride involved classic Disney characters. It was nice to have a ride themed to the classic characters from all of our childhoods
- Some of the scenery was really beautiful. My absolute favorite part is when it’s like your underseas. I really liked the design.
- There were some neat special effects. There’s one part where it feels like you’re about to go over a waterfall. I thought that was a neat special effect.
- I like that the ride is trackless. It’s similar to the Antarctica ride at SeaWorld Orlando.
- It’s an overall happy ride
The Bad
- The ride was jerky at times. This was not something I expected. Now I should probably tell you that I do get motion sickness a lot and don’t typically do roller coasters. So if roller coasters are fine for you, then this may not be a problem. But I feel like it’s something you should know. This wouldn’t preclude me from doing the ride again. It was just kind of disappointing to me since I thought this was a ride that was good for everyone. If I had to compare the jerkiness to another Disney ride, then I would say the Tigger section of the Winnie the Pooh ride at Magic Kingdom when the vehicle bounces up and down. So if you can handle that, you should be fine.
- The plotting to me was confusing. I didn’t really understand the plot. It just kind of randomly went from theme to theme. Like, at point you’re suddenly at a dance studio with Daisy Duck. Maybe I missed something, but where did this come from? Not that I expect a ride to tell a clear story from start to finish. It’s just this ride felt more like a bunch of random ideas strung together.
- This is a small thing, but for a ride that is supposed to be about Mickey & Minnie, there sure wasn’t much of Mickey and Minnie!
Verdict
I didn’t like this ride as much as I thought I might, mainly because I thought it was a bit jerky. But I think I will ride it again. So you should definitely check it out for yourself next time you visit Disney World.
