If you are a mom in the Philadelphia or Delaware Valley area, then you might not have time to travel to New Orleans this year for Mardi Gras. Even if you could get to New Orleans, if you have young children you may not to party with them, Mardi Gras-style. At least, not the way they party in New Orleans.
But what if there was a way to enjoy the fun of Mardi Gras with your kids? And a way to do this without having to leave the Philadelphia area?
Enter Sesame Place theme park. They are holding a Mardi Gras event this year from February 17, 2024, through March 17, 2024 on select dates. Participation in the event is included in park admission (and you can find out how to get discount prices for the tickets later on).
This Mardi Gras event is very much kid-friendly (as you would expect from the park). So the question is, what do kid-friendly Mardi Gras activities look like? Well, I am glad you asked, because I am about to tell you!
Mardi Gras Activities
Sesame Street Mardi Gras Parade
I don’t know about you, but when I think of Mardi Gras, I think of the parade. Well, your favorite residents of Sesame Street would like to participate in their very own Mardi Gras parade.
In this parade, you’ll get to see Sesame Street friends dressed up and on beautifully decorated floats with purple, good, green, and lots of sparkles. It is a wonderful, family-friendly parade.
Strolling Entertainment
What is Mardi Gras without strolling entertainment? The Bead Bike Brigade and stiltwalkers will be strolling around the park.
Mummers Band Shows
This award-winning Quaker City String Band will be performing New Orleans music in an interactive show where you can dance along to these great tunes.
Photo Opportunities
You and your child’s favorite Sesame Street characters will be there and dressed for the occasion. You can find them at Abby’s Paradise Theater and around Sesame Place. You can get a great photo with them to celebrate this great occasion!
Mardi Gras Mask Scavenger Hunt
Activity sheets for the Mardi Gras Mask Scavenger Hunt are available at Sesame Place. You can pick one up and then participate in the scavenger hunt which takes place all over the park. Once it is completed, head to Mr. Hooper’s Gift Shop so you can get a special prize.
Sesame Storytime
This special interactive storytime takes place on the upper level of Elmo’s Pizza Kitchen. Kids will be entertained by one of their favorite Sesame Street friends. Photo opportunites are available afterwards.
Please note, though, that space is limited and is available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Rides
A great thing about this event is that it comes with extra special festivities but the rides you and your kids love will still be available. Please note, however, that Honker Dinger Derby and Sunny Day Carousel are closed right now for maintenance.
Elmo the Musical, Live!
You can also enjoy shows like you do during a regular day at Sesame Place. This musical shows features Detective Elmo solving the case of Cookie Monster’s missing cookie.
Mardi Gras Treats
Enjoy Cajun and New Orleans dishes? Then you are at the right place! There will be Mardi Gras treats throughout the park.
Over at Plaza 1, you’ll find:

- Cajun Hush Puppies
- Boudin Balls
- Chicken Gumbo Shooters
- Mardi Gras Cupcakes
Over at the Foodie Truck, you’ll find:
- Beignets in powdered sugar
- Mardi Gras Bundt Cakes
- Funnel Cakes
- Plain and Blueberry
Mardi Gras-Themed Dine with Elmo & Friends
Dine with Elmo & Friends is a great experience throughout the year where you can enjoy a buffet meal and take great photos with Sesame Street characters.
But there is a special Mardi Gras-themed one going on during the event!
It has all the fun of a regular Dine with Elmo & Friends, but additionally, you’ll get to enjoy traditional New Orleans music. Plus, you can participate in your own mini Mardi Gras parade!
