Kelly’s Olympian
At 122 years old, Kelly’s Olympian is the third oldest continuously open bar/restaurant in Portland. It’s rumored that a “speakeasy” operated out of its basement during Prohibition. Your guide will tell you about the reported spirits sightings as you enjoy a cocktail (your own expense).
Shanghai Tunnels
No tour of Portland would be complete without the Shanghai Tunnels. A maze of interconnected basements, makeshift rooms and low ceiling tunnels reached the waterfront in the 1890s. Illegal goods, like opium, could be sneaked in from ships. Kidnapped victims could be sneaked onto ships.
Shanghaiing was the practice of kidnapping men and selling them to ship’s captains for their crew. They would pick men in bars who had passed out or they would drug them. Other horrific crimes were said to go on in the tunnels, although evidence of exactly what happened down there in the last century is not available.
Most of the tunnels were closed and sealed during World War II. They’re used for storage under buildings now, if used at all. Many have collapsed over the years and are not safe.
Screams and wailings from those tormented in the tunnels can still be heard. The atrocities that occurred in the tunnels can be felt and sometimes seen in the area. National Geographic chose the tunnels to be one of the Top 10 Most Haunted Places In America.
Kell’s Irish Pub
You’ll stop in Kell’s Irish Pub for more liquid courage and learn that Kell’s Cigar Room connects with one of the Shanghai Tunnels. Staff and patrons have seen a sinister black cloud and the manager has seen a disembodied head in the mirror. TVs and music come on all by themselves and furniture has been rearranged.
This tour offers a brutally honest look at Portland’s hidden past and gives you insights into the hauntings that are happening today. Whether you believe in the paranormal or not, you’ll learn a lot of local history in a very entertaining way.
