Reno Ghost Tour Backstory

Settlers came to Nevada in droves in search of gold, silver or copper.  These settlers dreamed of making a fast fortune.  The miners were followed by gamblers, saloon keepers and prostitutes.  Reno was a rough and tumble pioneer town.

The miners inadvertently created a legacy of greed and violence.  Past crimes committed by outlaws, pimps and gamblers have left a permanent stain on this city that continues to be felt today.

The Mapes Hotel was built on the site of an ancient Native American burial ground.  Many people believe those whose final resting place was disturbed by the construction of the hotel have cursed the hotel.  The movie, “The Misfits,” was filmed in the hotel and Clark Gable and Marilyn Monroe stayed there.

Clark Gable passed away just days after the filming was completed.  Marilyn Monroe died one year later.  Since then, many people have reported seeing her on the 6th floor of the hotel.  Your guide will tell you about this and also the intriguing mystery of D.B. Cooper and how it’s tied to the hotel.

Many Chinese immigrants settled in the section of Reno that became known as Chinatown.  While the Chinese were ostracized, they did provide restaurants and laundry services.  Unfortunately, this part of town attracted opium dealers, prostitutes, gangsters and other criminals.  This gave the area a terrible reputation and it became known as the Red Light District.

Paranormal activity is prevalent in this area with reports of disembodied faces being seen in windows, mysterious “hot spots,” smells of noodle soup in the air and disembodied screams of horror.  Your guide will tell you all about this as you travel over the haunted ground.
