The Lunar New Year, aka Spring Festival, is commonly known as Chinese New Year in the United States. This year it will begin on February 1, 2022, and will the celebrations will last 15 days. One of the most celebrated holidays in Asian culture, it is gaining in popularity in this country.

2022 is the Year of the Tiger, the third sign in the Chinese zodiac. It is believed that the animal ruling your birth year influences your personality and ultimately your destiny. Those born during the Year of the Tiger are brave, competitive, charming and friendly. They love a challenge and are endowed with good luck and authority.

Lunar New Year Preparations

Families begin preparing for the New Year celebrations weeks in advance. Preparations include

  • Oranges & mangoes represent luck and success. Have pairs of oranges with leaves as gifts for visiting elders and family members.
  • Candy symbolizes happiness and sweetness. Sweets can usher in a happy life in the New Year.
  • Money trees represent the generation of more good luck and money in the New Year.
  • Red is considered a lucky color representing happiness, beauty, good luck and good fortune. Wear red and decorate with red during the Lunar New Year.
  • Clean you house. Sweeping and cleaning in preparation for the New Year symbolizes sweeping away bad luck from the last year.

AsiaTown, formerly known as Chinatown, is a unique Cleveland neighborhood, business and dining district, a vibrant cultural destination and residences. Lunar New Year celebrations in AsiaTown include firecrackers, the lion dance and the dragon dance, which chase away evil spirits and usher in good luck.

Celebrating in Cleveland

Here are some of the ways you can celebrate the Chinese New Year in AsiaTown and other locations in Cleveland.

Asia Plaza Lunar and Asia Town Center hast the Kwan Lion Dance and OCA Dragon Dance. They will also have make and take craft stations, firecrackers and other traditional festivities.

Dim Sum is a traditional 10 course banquet and can be a culinary celebration for the New Year. Li Wah Restaurant in Asia Plaza is offering this. The restaurant also has Kwan Lion Dance on the Lunar New Year weekends. AsiaTown has other Chinese restaurants offering festive meals and cultural programs during the New Year celebrations.

Case Western Reserve University will have a Chinese New Year celebration on January 31, 2022. There will be a fireworks display. They will also have traditional dance performances, Asian snacks and giveaways for the students at this free event.

Cleveland Public Library, Brooklyn Branch, will be offering a dragon story and a craft workshop to celebrate Chinese New Year.

In Elyria, an east Cleveland suburb, the 2022 Year of the Tiger National Pageant begins on Friday, February 18, 2022, at 5 pm.

The Young Chefs Academy in the suburb of Strongsville is offering a Chinese New Year Workshop with culinary classes for children, ages 4 to 15, on Saturday, January 29, 2022, at 1:30 pm.
