In January, 1692, two young girls started screaming, barking and displaying other horrifying symptoms. They claimed these were signs of Satanic possession. The girls claimed there were witches in Salem that had caused them to be possessed.

On March 1, 1692, Sarah Goode, Sarah Osborne and Tituba were charged with the crime of witchcraft. Tutuba was an enslaved woman from Barbados and she confessed to being a witch and helped the authorities in identifying more witches in Salem. As a confessed witch, Tituba was not considered to be a threat to the community. Not a single person who confessed to being a witch was executed.

As the year went on, there became a group of girls, ages 9 to 20, who claimed to be possessed and accused others in Salem of being witches. More than 200 people were accused of practicing witchcraft and 20 were executed. I had always heard that they were burned at the stake, but that isn’t true.
