The first summer theater opened its doors at Elitch Gardens, Denver Colorado on May 1, 1890. Plays were presented with a resident company and guest stars, a policy that has been followed with tremendous success. Theater venues varied from outdoors to tents to barns.

The state of Maine has a history of summer stock. The Gem Theater on Peaks Island opened in 1884 as a roller-skating rink and became a theater in 1898. The huge building was one of the first in a long line of Maine summer stock playhouses. It remained in operation until the mid-1920s. It was destroyed by a fire in 1934.

As a small boy growing up in South Portland, Maine, I can remember reading the Entertainment section of the Portland newspaper and seeing programming information on radio, television, movies, and summer stock. At that time Radio shows still included Comedy, Drama, and News.

If you are looking for a unique and memorable experience, consider visiting the Ogunquit Playhouse. This venue has been entertaining audiences for over 90 years and has received numerous positive reviews from visitors. Located in the charming coastal town of Ogunquit, the Ogunquit Playhouse is one of the oldest summer theaters in the country. It has a rich history of presenting Broadway-quality shows, and its productions have been lauded by critics and audiences alike.
