The Lunar New Year is commonly known as the Chinese New Year in the United States. 2022 is the Year of the Tiger, the third sign in the Chinese zodiac. This year it will begin on February 1, 2022, and the celebrations will last 15 days.

Lunar New Year Celebrations in Houston

Everything is bigger in Texas and that’s true of their celebrations. Thousands of Texans come to Houston each year to attend one of its many festivals and parties.

Asia Society Texas Center

The Asia Society Texas Center is having a Year of the Tiger celebration on February 5, 2022, from 11 am to 4 pm. Traditional Lion Dancers will perform outside on the festival lawn. This event is free and open to the public. Activities include

  • Tiger Hat Making
  • Chinese Dance – Learn classical moves requiring skill, balance and concentration.
  • Lunar New Year Around The World
  • Zodiac Game – Learn about the zodiac, identify your animal and take a fun postcard home.

Huaxing Arts Group

Huaxing Arts Group will present a collection of Chinese music and dance. They will perform modern interpretations of traditional tunes and classic folk dances. The Huaxing Arts Group will highlight a variety of performers and dance styles. There will be tickets to the performance costing $5 for members and $10 for nonmembers.

Chinese Community Center

The Chinese Community Center is a great place to ring in the Lunar New Year. Their 2022 Lunar New Year Festival is being held on Saturday, February 5, 2022, from 10 am to 4 pm. This is a free family friendly outdoor event. It celebrates the Lunar New Year as well as the beauty of Houston’s vast cultural diversity. The Festival features a variety of cultural and family activities, vendors, Lunar New Year merchandise, delectable food and beverages and performances to welcome in the Year of the Tiger.

Viet Hoa Center

You can also celebrate the Year of the Tiger at Lunar New Year Houston at Viet Hoa Center. This pan-Asian free outdoor party celebrates Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, Cambodian, Japanese and Filipino cultures. This weekend event is happening on February 5 and 6, 2022, from 10 am to 6 pm. You’ll experience one hundred lions and dragons, a million red firecrackers and delicious food.

Texas Lunar Festival

This year the annual Texas Lunar Festival in Houston will be virtual on January 29, 2022, from 10 am to 5 pm. The program will include martial arts, traditional dance performances, a fashion show, food trucks and vendors.

In addition, some restaurants, breweries, museums, galleries and other venues have special offers for the New Year.
