The Turkish Riviera, aka the Turquoise Coast, is a coastline in Southwest Turkey. It stretches from Cesma to Alanya and includes the Aegean Sea and the Mediterranean Sea. It is a popular tourist destination with its beautiful beaches, turquoise waters and many attractions.
Patara Beach is part of the Turkish Riviera. It has a desert like sand cliff that is extremely popular with tourists. Saint Nicholas, aka Santa Claus, was born and raised in Patara.
Patara was a major port and city in ancient times and many come to see the ruins of this city. The main section of the ruins is dominated by the 5,000 seat theatre. Next door is the bouleuterion, ancient Patara’s “parliament.” It has received a 8.5 million dollar reconstruction and restoration.
Columns have been erected to restore the colonnaded street that ran north of here and was Patara’s most elegant boulevard.
You can also see the 2nd century triple arch, the Arch of Modestus with a necropolis containing a number of ancient tombs. You’ll see the Harbor Baths complex and the remains of a Byzantine basilica.
There are the remnants from a lighthouse built by Emperor Nero and it’s one of the three oldest lighthouses in the world. You’ll see the remains of the Granery of Hadrian used to store cereals and olive oil when Patara was a major port per Lonely Planet.
