The Lunar New Year, aka Chinese New Year or Spring Festival, will begin on February 17, 2026. The celebrations will last 15 days. It is one of the most important holidays in Asian culture.

2026 is the Year of the Fire Horse.  People born in the Year of the Fire Horse are said to be adventurous, charming and determined.

Lunar New Year is celebrated enthusiastically in Edmonton, Alberta. Over 100,000 people of Asian heritage live in Edmonton. The New Year is celebrated with festivals, entertainment performances, martial art, lion dance, decorations, special dinners, flowers, and much more. Some of these even have free admission and everyone can participate in the festivities.

Lunar New Year Extravaganza 2026

Edmonton Chinatown Multi-Cultural Centre is having a Lunar New Year Extravaganza 2026 on February 7, from 10 am to 6 pm.  This will be happening at the Ice Rink at West Point Mall.  

The program will feature different cultural performances and Lunar New Year customs and traditions.  You’ll see lion dances, Tai Chi and Kung Fu demonstrations, traditional Chinese music performances, singers and dancers.  There will be dozens of vendors selling flowers, food, ornaments and gifts.

A food bank will be available and donations will equal free admission.  Seniors over 65 and children under 10 will also get free admission.  Everyone else will pay $3.

Londonderry Mall East Court

Celebrate Lunar New Year of the Fire Horse at Londonderry Mall East Court (66 Street Entrance) on February 8, 2026, from 12 pm to 5 pm. Enjoy Lion Dances, Arts & Crafts, Music, Games, Martial Arts, God of Fortune, Wishing Tree, Drumming and more! Admission is free. This is presented by Edmonton Chinese Bilingual Education Association.

Chinatown Dining Week

Chinatown Dining Week is bigger and better than ever with 32 participating restaurants this year.  Each restaurant is offering special menus for $10 or $20 that can be ordered from January 29 to February 8, 2026, for dining in or take out. 

Spring Festival Gala Performance

The Edmonton Chinese Community is presenting the Spring Festival Gala Performance on March 30, 2024, in the Year of the Dragon.  It will be happening at the Winspear Music Center.

Lunar New Year Culinary Celebration

Fairmont Hotel MacDonald is having a culinary celebration of  Lunar New Year on February 20. 2026.  Executive Chef John Lance presents a Chinese inspired menu that is paired with wines from around the world.  Dragon dancing will be performing during the dinner.  Welcome in prosperity for the Year of the Fire Horse.
