Great news, Iowa!  Phantom Fall Fest is back at Adventureland theme park in Altoona, Iowa!  Yes, the fun fall festival is back at the popular Des Moines area amusement park.  It takes place on select days and nights through October 27, 2024.  The tame Halloween fun and the scares are both back, and better than ever!

So I want to tell you what you can expect at this fall event.  And then I’ll tell you how you can save money on your tickets!

Kids Activities

Phantom Fall Fest has two parts.  One part is the spooks and scares for older children and adults, which I will get to later.

But the other part is the family-friendly Halloween fun you can get during the day.  Adventureland will be open between 1:00 PM and 5:00 PM on Saturdays and Sundays this fall for Phantom Fest.  And during these hours, you can enjoy tame fall fun like:

  • Trick or Treating
  • Halloween Costume Contest
  • Hay Maze
  • Pumpkin Painting
  • Scream Contest
  • Scary-oke

These are great activities, especially trick-or-treating since it is a great chance for you to take your child trick-or-treating in a really safe way.  And if your kid doesn’t have a Halloween costume yet, check out the Halloween costumes here.

The whole event is great for children who are too young for the haunted houses that take place later that night since it could scare them and give them nightmares.  Or adults like me who are not ready for these haunted houses, as they could scare me and give me nightmares.

But if you are braver than me and love getting spooked during the spooky season, keep reading.

Haunted Houses & Scare Zones

So once again, these haunted houses and scare zones are not for the faint of heart.  But they are for anyone who likes getting scared.  And Adventureland has some good ones this year!

Let’s start with the haunted houses.  There’s mALICE in Wonderland, which is a delightfully twisted take on Alice in Wonderland where you need to escape from the Evil Queen.  CarnEvil has a fun, evil-carnival type feel with distorted funhouse mirrors and evil clowns.  The plotline of Spirits of the Swamp involves a roadside attraction of a bayou ghost town that lures you in.  And finally, Cornstalkers is a haunted house which I personally think is perfect for an Iowa theme park.  The theme of this haunted house is that there’s a chemical spill in an Iowa corn field – and now the corn is alive!

Then there are the Scare Zones.  These are the parts of the park where you can costumed actors can jump out and scare you at any time.  You’ll find zombies at Deadsville, ancient warriors from Nordic lore that have awoken from their sleep at Nordic Nightmare, terrors from the afterlife at a graveyard at The Fallen, and nightmares come to life at Hellbillies.
