Looking for some fun this summer near Chicago, Illinois? Then head to Six Flags Great America theme park in Gurnee, Illinois! It is after all Illinois’ biggest outdoor amusement park. There are so many attractions there.
So we want to tell you about some of these attractions. Then we’ll tell you how you can save money on your ticket with a great discount!
Rides
Sky Striker
Sky Striker was a brand new attraction added this year (2024). It is a massive pendulum ride that takes you 172 feet into the air at speeds of up to 75 miles per hour.
BATMAN: The Ride
BATMAN: The Ride is a 55-mile-per-hour, 10-story high roller coaster with five inversions. It has the distinction of being the world’s first inverted roller coaster as well as the first roller coaster where guests ride on the outside of a vertical loop.
THE DARK KNIGHT Coaster
What’s better than one Batman-themed roller coaster? How about two Batman-themed roller coasters?
THE DARK KNIGHT was Six Flag Great America’s first indoor coaster when it opened in 2008. This coaster takes you through a Gotham City rail station & a dark abandoned subway line. And you’ll be going quickly, as the Joker is hot on your tail!
Maxx Force
Maxx Force is a coaster train modeled after Formula One racing cars. The roller coaster has a lot of unique distinctions. It has the world’s highest double inversion at 175 feet above the ground. It also has North America’s fastest accelerating launch on a roller coaster. You’ll go from zero to 78 miles per hour in the blink of an eye.
Raging Bull
Raging Bull was Six Flags Great America’s tenth roller coaster, and it was also quite unique when it first debuted. It was the world’s first hyper-twister roller coaster. At 202 feet tall and 5,057 feet long, it is the tallest and longest roller coaster in Six Flags Great America. So it is no surprise that it is quite the fan-favorite ride.
SUPERMAN: Ultimate Flight
Superman is a beloved DC comics hero, so it is only fitting his namesake ride be great, right? SUPERMAN: Ultimate Flight is a roller coaster that could actually be qualified as a flying coaster and as such is the only flying coaster in all of the Midwest. It is a 115-foot tall creatively designed steel coaster and has one of the first pretzel-shaped inverted loops. You reach speeds of over fifty miles per hour and is a fan favorite.
American Eagle
American Eagle has been a popular roller coaster with roller coaster enthusiasts for over 40 years. it is still the world’s tallest and fastest racing wooden roller coaster. A neat thing about it is that it features a double track here so two trains can go at the same time.
JUSTICE LEAGUE: Battle for Metropolis
JUSTICE LEAGUE: Battle for Metropolis is a fully immersive family ride where you are called upon to be a superhero. You’ll have to battle supervillains Lex Luthor and the Joker after they kidnapped superheroes Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, and the Flash. Luckily, you’ll have stun guns to help you battle the villains.
Goliath
This roller coaster had the distinction of breaking three world records when it debuted: the world’s fastest wooden coaster, the world’s tallest drop for a wooden coaster, and the steepest drop for a wooden coaster. It still has the tallest drop of any wooden roller coaster at 180 feet – and it still is a fan favorite!
AQUAMAN Splashdown
A flume ride themed to the popular DC Comics hero. It features a 60-foot drop, great views of the park from the top, and plenty of water to cool you down on a hot day!
Columbia Carousel
Anyone who has stepped foot through Six Flags Great America’s front gate has noticed the Columbia Carousel. The double-decker grand carousel is a classic family attraction.
X Flight
X Flight was North America’s first wing roller coaster and was featured on the Travel Channel show “Insane Coaster Wars” in 2012. It has a 3,000-foot-long steel track with 5 inversions, and its zero-G roll gives you the feeling of weightlessness.
Demon
One of the world’s first roller coasters to feature a double corkscrew calls Six Flags Great America home, and that roller coaster is Demon. It is a 2,130-foot-long, 10-story high roller coaster with speeds of up to 45 miles per hour. It is a good introduction to looping coasters.
THE JOKER Free-Fly Coaster
THE JOKER Free-Fly Coaster is a unique ride befitting of the unique villain from the Batman comic. It is actually considered a 4D coaster, which means the seats rotate as you ride. It also features one-of-a-kind onboard magnetic technology so you get smooth head-over-heels free-fly flips. Every experience is even different, too, so you can ride it multiple times and have a unique experience each time.
The Great American Scenic Railway
Want a way to see the whole park that kids and adults can enjoy together? Then hop aboard the Great American Scenic Railway! You can find stations to board the train in both Hometown Square and County Fair. Not only is a ride on the railway fun and relaxing, but it can also be a great way to get from one part of the park to another.
Sky Trek Tower
Another great way to see the park is from up above by going up the Sky Trek Tower. You’ll be 28.5 stories in the air, and see great views from a rotating, aerial cabin. In addition to seeing the entire park, you’ll also see Lake Michigan and, on clear days, the Chicago skyline.
Another added bonus of this attraction? You get to learn interesting facts about Six Flags Great America’s history during the ride.
Chubasco
Chubasco is a classic amusement park teacup ride.
THE FLASH: Vertical Velocity
THE FLASH: Vertical Velocity is a launched shuttle-style coaster that gets to speeds of up to 70 miles per hour. Because, of course, a ride themed to The Flash would have to be fast!
Krazy Kups
Krazy Kups is also a teacup ride but for younger guests so it is milder.
DC Super-Villains Swing
Feel like you are soaring through the air on a swing as your seat rises higher and higher while your chair spins faster. If you look up, you just may notice a villain (or two)!
Little Dipper
Little Dipper is a ride that originally built in 1950 for Kiddieland in Melrose Park, Illinois, and they were able to bring it over to Six Flags Great America. It is a great smaller-scaler coaster that is perfect for younger guests.
Sprocket Rockets
Sprocket Rockets is another good introduction to roller coasters. It has a futuristic theme and features futuristic music.
Fiddler’s Fling
Fiddler’s Fling is like a scrambler ride, just much extreme due to the sheer amount of times and ways you are flung around. A neat thing about the ride is that where you sit gives you a totally different experience, so much so that you can ride Fiddler’s Fling multiple times during a visit to Six Flags Great America and have a different experience every time.
Viper
Viper was the first single-track wooden roller coaster at Six Flags Great America. It is 10 10-story tall, cyclone-style wooden roller coaster modeled after the classic Coney Island Cyclone ride. Highlights include an 80-foot drop and speeds of up to 50 miles per hour.
Hometown Fun Machine
If you are looking more for a classic scrambler, then Hometown Fun Machine is the ride for you. It was one of the original rides when the park debuted in 1976.
Giant Drop
First, you’ll rise to the top of the 227-foot tower and get great views of the park. But after enjoying great views of the park from up above, watch out – that’s when you’ll drop down at 62 miles per hour.
Red Baron
Red Baron is a World War I biplane replica attraction that soars up in the air and flies around in a circle. A night thing about the attraction is that guests get the opportunity to control the up-and-down motions of the planes so they can control how high (or low) the plane goes.
Logger’s Run
Cool down on a hot summer day on this family-friendly log flume ride.
Roaring Rapids
Another great way to stay cool on a summer’s day is Roaring Rapids, an authentic whitewater river rafting experience. The waves and water make each ride on this attraction unique. Your raft swings around rocks and whirlpools. You’ll go past waterfalls and mist-filled tunnels. And towards the end of the ride, you can even get sprayed by guests who can spray you from a lookout point towards the end of the ride.
Whizzer
Whizzer is a classic family-friendly coaster that was an opening day ride. It is also a good starter coaster.
River Rocker
Climb aboard a sea vessel but not for a boat ride. Instead, this vessel swings from side to side, gaining speed. Once it fully gains speed, it swings through a 180-degree arc.
Condor
Feel like a bird flying in the sky when your bird vehicle rotates around up 112 feet in the air. This kid-friendly ride has been entertaining guests at Six Flags Great America since 1991.
Big Easy Balloons
Big Easy Balloons features balloon baskets that seat up to four passengers. They fly around in a circular motion. It is one of the tamer rides at Six Flags Chicago so younger guests can enjoy it.
Krazy Kars
Krazy Kars gives younger guests the chance to see what it is like to drive a car themselves!
Tot’s Livery
Tot’s Livery is a kid-frie4ndly ride where guests ride horse-drawn carriages vehicles around a circle. The ride overlooks a serene pond in Hometown Park, making the experience quite relaxing. This ride was actually first at Six Flags Great America when it opened in 1976, was removed, but then made its triumphant return in 2015.
Ricochet
Ricochet is a wild, rebounding swing with relentless, high-altitude spin action.
Lady Bugs
Lady Bugs was an opening-day ride, and Six Flags Great America brought it back for its 40th season. Your Lady Bug vehicle takes you around the flowers in the center of the attraction.
ZoomJets
ZoomJets is a circular red junior-sized airplane ride over in KIDZOPOLIS.
Rue Le Dodge
Rue Le Dodge is a French-themed bumper car attraction.
Triple Play
Triple Play is a spinning machine attraction where three giant arms rotate guests in different directions. Speed and elevation will increase as the ride goes on.
The Lobster
The Lobster is a classic, wild ride where your vehicle will take you high, low and side-to-side.
Up, Up & Away
Up, Up & Away is a spinning, floating children’s ride.
Bouncer
Bouncer is a classic children’s tower ride where kids are moved up and down, from the tree trunk to the tree top.
Yahoo River
Yahoo River is a circling river cruise ride for children in Camp Cartoon.
Winner’s Circle Go Karts
Enjoy classic go-kart style racing on a full-size, fast speedway. A neat thing about the go karts is that some of theme are themed to Six Flags Great America rides!
