The Lunar New Year, aka Chinese New Year or Spring Festival, will begin on January 22, 2023. The celebrations will last 15 days. It is one of the most important holidays in Asian culture.

2023 is the year of the Water Rabbit. It is predicted to be a year of hope. People born in the year of the Rabbit are believed to be ingenious, quick thinking, witty and vigilant.

Lunar New Year is celebrated enthusiastically in Edmonton, Alberta. Over 100,000 people of Asian heritage live in Edmonton. The New Year is celebrated with festivals, entertainment performances, martial art, lion dance, decorations, special dinners and much more. Some of these even have free admission and everyone can participate in the festivities.

West Edmonton Mall

The 2023 Lunar New Year Extravaganza Year of the Rabbit is being held on January 7 at 11 am and will run through January 8 at 5 pm. This is being held at the West Edmonton Mall Ice Palace. This is one of the biggest New Year festivals with lots pf performances and prizes. It is presented by the Edmonton Chinatown Multicultural Centre. Admission is $2. Children under 10 and Senior Citizens over 65 years old will get in free. You’ll see Chinese Dragon Dances, Korean Drummers, Tae Kwando performances and much more.

Kingsway Mall

Kingsway Mall will have its Lunar New Year Celebration on January 14, 2023. Festivities will begin at 11 am and continue 5 pm.

Londonderry Mall East Court

Celebrate Lunar New Year of the Rabbit at Londonderry Mall East Court (66 Street Entrance) on January 15, 2023, from 1 pm to 4 pm. Enjoy Lion Dances, Arts & Crafts, Music, Games, Martial Arts, God of Fortune, Wishing Tree, Drumming and more! Admission is free. This is presented by Edmonton Chinese Bilingual Education Association.

2023 Lunar New Year Banquet will be held at Dynasty Century Palace Restaurant on January 20, 2023. Celebrate the New Year of the Water Rabbit. This will be a night filled with various icebreakers, $5 Tsingtao, karaoke, prizes and more. Each table will have a complimentary bottle of baijiu.

The schedule is as follows:

  • 6 pm – Doors open and icebreaker Bingo
  • 7 pm – Lion Dance and then program begins
  • 8 pm – Karaoke

The party will continue until 11:30 pm.


The Asian Pacific Islander & Desi Americans (APIDA) Arts is welcoming the Year of the Water Rabbit with a celebration on January 24, 2023, from 7:30 pm to 10 pm. It’s a fun fundraising event.

You are invited to celebrate a New Year together with a lot of promise and ambition. The program will be featuring visual artists, musicians, photographers amd vendors. Have a drink, enjoy some small bites and pass along some red cards to help APIDA Arts fundraise for their annual APIDA Heritage Month in May.

Jing Ying Martial Arts is having their annual Chinese New Year Party on February 11, 2023, at Dynasty Country Palace Restaurant. Doors will open at 6 pm. They will be celebrating the Year of the Rabbit.
