A common misconception is that all roses are created by mixing white wine with red wine. That type of rose exists but it is rare.
Rose is not a specific type of grape, it is simply a genre of wine, like red and white wine. It is produced like red wine, but the time it ferments with the grape skins is reduced.
When grapes are crushed, the juice that comes out is clear. When the skins are placed with the juice, the process is called maceration. For rose, winemakers only macerate for a few hours. When the juice reaches the desired color, the skins are removed and then fermentation continues.
Each type of rose will taste slightly different based on which grape was used to produce it. The tastes range from sweet to dry to savory. European roses are usually very dry. Roses produced in the U.S. and Australia are typically sweet.
