Have you ever watched one of the ghost investigation shows and thought what they were doing was cool and you wanted to do that? Well, now you can. Get an overnight tour of the Indiana State Sanatorium!
The Indiana State Sanatorium was founded in 1908 as a tuberculosis hospital. With advanced medical techniques in the 1960s, tuberculosis was nearly eradicated.
The hospital was sold to private owners who converted it to a large scale nursing facility. And it was later expanded to a psychiatric facility.
This facility operated until 2011 when it closed under questionable circumstances. There were malpractice suits and wrongful death suits. The sanatorium lost its license to practice medicine.. U.S. Marshalls came in and shut it down.
It is estimated that there have been thousands of deaths that occurred at the sanatorium over the last 100 years. Most of these were tuberculosis deaths. The later deaths were murders and suicides. Accidental deaths also occurred. People escaped and died in the creek or ran out in the street and was hit by a car.
The psychiatric hospital looms over the complex at five stories tall. The first two floors housed men and women patients. The third floor held women who could not be around men and the fourth had men who could not be around women. The fifth floor housed violent male patients. The most reports for paranormal activity in the psychiatric hospital come from this floor. There were a number of suicides with people jumping from the roof.
There are rumors of a potters field on the grounds but no one knows for sure. Running underground at the sanatorium is a long steam tunnel connecting the tuberculosis hospital with the nursing home.
There were reports of paranormal activity at the sanatorium by staff members before it closed. They’ve continued until today. They tend to be auditory rather than visual.
Coughing and wheezing can be heard when no one is there, leaving many to believe that not all the tuberculosis patients have actually left.
Disembodied voices, both male and female, have been recorded by investigators throughout the complex. The nurses’ station area of the former nursing home is a hotspot for activity. This was the case while the Indiana State Sanatorium was still in operation.
There is a female apparition that has been reported by numerous investigators in the laundry and the administration offices. Intense poltergeist episodes have been reported in the laundry room. Objects move on their own and fly through the air when no one is seen.
Today the Indiana State Sanatorium is a sprawling 200+ acre complex with more than 720,000 sq. ft. in the historic buildings. That’s a lot to explore.
So why settle for a 90 minute walk through when you can stay and investigate all night long?
