Palm Springs Aerial Tramway

Did you know the world’s largest rotating tramcar is in Palm Springs, California?  Yes, the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway is quite wonderful.  In fact, it is so wonderful that the construction of the Aerial Tramway was even called the “eighth wonder of the world.”  They creatively used helicopters to erect four of the five supporting towers.  The Tramway has since been designated as a historical civil engineering landmark.  So you are definitely going to want to check it out yourself.

And you will be glad when you do.  You can use the tramway to ascend two and a half miles along the breathtaking cliffs of Chino Canyon.  The ride lasts about ten minutes.  And the tram cars rotate slowly, so you get amazing views of the valley floor below.

Once the ride is over, you’re at to get to the 14,000-acre pristine Mt. San Jacinto State Park!  One of the things you will notice right away is the temperature difference.  It’s about 30 degrees of difference in the temperature of the valley floor and the top!

And there is a lot of fun at the top.

Hiking

Mt. San Jacinto State Park has fifty-four miles of hiking trails within one of California’s last pristine wildernesses.  All the trails are easily accessed when you exit the Tram’s Mountain Station.  When you are not hiking, there are picnic tables, water, a Ranger Station, and flush toilets.

Cross-Country Skiing

If you love cross-country skiing, then you will love the challenges of skiing at Mt. San Jacinto State Park.  Skis, boots, and poles are available for rental at the Adventure Center.  You can also bring your own equipment.

SnowShoeing

You can also take a walk in Mt. San Jacinto State Park in the winter with snowshoes, which are available for rental here.  Please note that if you venture outside of Long Valley you’ll need a wilderness permit.  You can get one from the Ranger Station in Long Valley.

Family Snow Fun

There a lot of fun things your family can do together in the snow.  The mountain gift shop even sells sleds along with cold-weather apparel.

Dining

Enjoy delicious food along with spectacular views!  Peaks is a great fine dining restaurant.  You will love the views of the Coachella Valley.  Pines is a casual cafeteria-style restaurant. Both of these restaurants are open for lunch and dinner.   You can also buy alcoholic beverages and appetizers at the Lookout Lounge, which is a full cocktail bar.
