Phoenix Zoo is located on 125 acres within the beautiful Papago Park in Maricopa County, Arizona. It is one of the largest non-profit zoos in the United States. There are over 3,000 animals and almost 400 different species represented at the Phoenix Zoo.
Today, I am going to talk about some of the great attractions and things you can do at the Phoenix Zoo. And then I will tell you how to save money on your ticket with a great coupon!
Walking Trails
Phoenix Zoo has 2.5 miles of walking paths divided into four different trails.
Africa Trail
The African trail will make you feel like you’ve walked into the depths of Africa. It’s also where you find some of the zoo’s most popular animals. This includes:
- Lions
- Zebras
- Cheetahs
- Giraffes
- Southern White Rhino
- Ostrich
- Mandrill
- Hamadryas Baboon
- Gazelle
- Hyenas
- African Painted Dog
Arizona Trail
This is where you find wildlife and plants that you find in Arizona. That means you see Sonoran Desert [plans like the saguaro cactus. It also means you see animals like:
- Mountain Lion
- Mexican Gray Wolf
- Coyote
- Bobcat
- Collared Peccary (alsoly known as the Javelina)
- Sonoran Pronghorn
- Turkey Vulture
- Thick-Billed Parrot
Tropics Trail
The Tropics Trail actually consists of two different parts.
There is an inner trail following the lake with animals like the Bornean orangutans. It is also open to the “Tropical Flights” aviary and Monkey Village. Monkey Village is the only walk-through squirrel monkey exhibit in the country!
Then there is an outer tropics trail. It passes by the “Land of the Dragons” exhibit, where you can find Komodo dragons. You also pass by the “Isle of the Tiger” habitat, where you see Sumatran tigers. You also see a lot of tropical birds.
Other animals you see include:
- Asian elephants
- Jaguars
- Tortoises
- Iguanas
- Anteaters
The Tropics Trail is also where you see the Forest of Uco. This is a lush rainforest landscape that includes reproductions of a South American Mercado, a scientific expedition, and ruins. You also see several tropical animals like the Andean bear.
Children’s Trail
The Nina Mason Pulliam Children’s Trail is a great way for kids to get up close and personal with lots of small animals from around the world. Some of these animals include:
- An ocelot
- A caracal
- Emus
- Siamang Gibbons
- Golden Lion Tamarins
Another part of the trail is Harmony Farm. Here you find farm animals, a petting zoo, and farming and agriculture-oriented demonstrations aimed toward children.
Some of the animals you see there include:
- Horses
- Cows
- Goats
- Sheep
- Chickens
- Turkeys
There are also farm tractors and equipment kids can climb on and explore.
Oh, and the Children’s Trail is where you find the popular Fernando. He’s a two-toed sloth!
Camel Rides
One of the most popular things to do at the Phoenix Zoo would have to be camel rides. You can ride a camel and have your picture taken!
