Since 1955, the people of Quebec have celebrated winter with the Quebec Winter Carnival. In 2006, there were over a million attendees, making it the largest winter festival in the world. Now Harbin Ice Festival in China is larger, but the Quebec Winter Carnival is still huge. And it’s a lot of fun!
This year the Winter Carnival will run from February 3 to February 12, 2023.
Bonhomme
Bonhomme is a 7 foot tall snowman who wears a red hat. He’s the ambassador of the festival and reflects the joie de vive of Quebec and the Winter Festival.
Ice Palace
Every year an Ice Palace is built for Bonhomme and it serves as a focal point for some of the carnival’s activities, including the opening ceremony and closing ceremony. If you really want to see the giant snowman, visit his Ice Palace.
Night Parades
There will be two night parades through the city streets with floats, marching bands and more. Each parade will feature Bonhomme.
Outdoor Sporting Events
Ice canoe racing is an extreme competitive sport where teams make multiple crossings of the frigid waters of the St. Lawrence River. Other outdoor sporting events include snowboarding, ice hockey, sleigh racing and dog sledding. Go to the Place D’Youville which features an outdoor skating rink.
The Plains of Abraham
The Plains of Abraham is a public park where you’ll find cross country skiing trails, snowshoeing, ice workshops and a bikini show bath event.
