ATV Tour To New Zealand’s Franz Joseph Glacier

The Maori name for the glacier is Ka Roirnata o Hine Hukatere and means “the tears of Hine Hukatere”. Legend has it that Hone Hukatore loved climbing in the mountains. She persuaded her lover, Tuawa, to go climbing with her. He was an inexperienced climber and was swept to his death by an avalanche. Hine Hukatere was heartbroken and her many tears flowed nonstop down the mountain. The tears froze and became the glacier.
The glacier was discovered by European explorers on 1865 and was named Franz Joseph after the Austrian emperor. Franz Joseph and nearby Fox Glacier are the most publicly accessible glaciers in New Zealand and are among the world’s most accessible glaciers.
Your guide will fit you with wet weather jacket, pants and gumboots. There will be a place for secure storage of your belongings at their base in the village of Franz Joseph, New Zealand. You’ll be instructed in how to ride the off roading vehicles. You can test your skills on the two test tracks. Drivers must be at least 16 years of age but no experience or driver’s license is required.
You’ll zip through a rainforest filled with lush vegetation. Explore scenic trails and get views of grasslands. Go over sand and mud and go across riverbeds and through creeks.
