Houston is America’s fourth largest city.  It is a cosmopolitan destination with the arts, world class dining, shopping, entertainment and nightlife.  Houston is said to be the place where Southern hospitality meets urban chic.  There’s always something to do in Houston.  Unfortunately, it can get expensive.

We at Green Vacation Deals look long and hard to find bargains, great deals and freebies.  And we just love to pass them along to our readers.  Here are 10 free and fun things to do in Houston.

  1. Miller Outdoor Theatre in Herman Park has free concerts, dance performances, musical theater, films and more.  Performances run March through October each year.  This is the largest always free theatrical program in the country.
  2. Houston Arboretum & Nature Center is a sanctuary for native plants and animals.  Admission is free and parking is free on Thursday.  It provides nature education for all people, guided nature hikes and bird surveys.
  3. The Menil Museum is a group of five art buildings Their exhibits span from the prehistoric era to today and include more than 25,000 works.  The Museum welcomes all people free of charge to its buildings.
  4. Buffalo Bayou Park contains the slow moving waterway where the first settlement in Houston was in 1886.  The park is a 160 acre greenspace with beautiful gardens, hike and bike trails, picnic area, paddle craft, dog park, play area and more.  And it’s free!
  5. Lee & Joe Jamail Skatepark is a state-of-the-art public skatepark.  It is a 30,000 square feet in-ground skatepark with areas for skaters of all levels.  Admission is free.
  6. Houston Zoo offers a free day on the first Thursday of each month
  7. Port Houston Boat Tour offers free 90 minute round trip, educational cruises along the Houston Ship Channel.  It has an air conditioned lounge and standing room on the open air deck.  And it is free.
  8. Rice University’s newest art installation is “Twilight Epiphany” Skyspace by James Turrell.  The artist uses light and space to alter the viewers’ perception of the sky.  There are two 40 minute light shows at sunrise and sunset.  They are free and take place 6 days a week (closed on Tuesday).
  9. Market Square Park has a plaza performance area, dog run, historic walkway, children’s play area and public art exhibits.
  10. Lawndale Art Center is dedicated to the presentation of contemporary art with an emphasis on works by local artists.  It presents exhibitions, lectures and events.  It includes almost 500 artists annually in its changing exhibitions.  Admission is free.
