There are so many reasons you will want to visit the Natural Bridge Caverns next time you vacation in San Antonio, Texas. It is one of the premier show caves in the world. It is one of Texas’s largest caverns. And it is also one of the only permanent outdoor mazes in all of Texas.
So I know you would love to take a guided tour through the Natural Bridge Caverns. It’s a half-mile journey through 180 feet below the ground. You’ll get to listen to a knowledgeable tour guide who will tell you all about the Natural Bridge Caverns. So in addition to seeing the beautiful caverns, you’ll learn a lot, too.
So, you may have noticed earlier I called it a show cave. You might be wondering what that is. Well, what it means is that state-of-the-art lighting illuminates gigantic, otherworldly formations. These formations were once formed by single drops of water and the slow passage of time.
But there’s more to do here than just see the caverns.
Discovery Village Mining Co.
One of those things you can do is mine for gold!
See, what happens it that water runs from a wooden water tower through a sluice, or a series of troughs. You pour bags of mining “rough” into a screen tray. Then you lower your tray into the trough of water. While you sift & shake the tray, the flowing water reveals emeralds, rose quartz, amethyst, arrowheads, or even fossils.
Every bag of mining rough has a good assortment of treasures, too. You get to choose from Fossil bags, Arrowhead bags, or Gem & Mineral bags. Once you discover your gems and minerals you can use their identification charts to figure out what exactly you have found.
AMAZEn’ Ranch Roundup
The AMAZEn’ Ranch Roundup is a maze that’s fun for adults and kids. It was built to honor five generations of ranch ownership history in the Natural Bridge Caverns family. It is truly a one-of-a-kind maze. There are three towers and a bridge that help you find your way.
Twisted Trails Zip Rails & Rope Course
This for the brave and daring guests and definitely not the ones who are scared of heights!
This is a 60-foot high ropes course. When you get there, you’re outfitted with a full-body safety harness and slingline. A certified operator will connect you to the safety system, and then you’re ready to have fun! You’ll have up to 45 minutes to test your balance on a 4-level ropes course. Elements on this course include vertical rope ladders, double beams, lily pads, weave walk, squid steps, and twisted rope.
After the ropes course, you can seamlessly transition to one of the seven zip rails here. They’ve got over 685 total feet of suspended track, so you can soar high over the tree canopy. It’s kind of like riding a zip line, but in a way better because you are in control of what challenges and routes you take.
Twisted Trails Tykes
This is for the younger guests! It’s sort of like Twisted Trails, it’s just platforms are less than three feet from the ground. And parents/chaperones are required to be present to travel alongside their child.
Twisted Trails Climbing
Use your upper body strength and great footwork to maneuver vertical structures like the Astroball, Jungle Gym, Twister, or the Face to Face. It is designed so multiple climbers can participate at the same time so you can compete against your family or friends!
