Cinco de Mayo commemorates the victory of the ill equipped Mexican Army over the much larger French Army in the Battle of Puebla in 1862. The victory became a symbol of Mexican resistance to foreign domination. On May 5, people observe Cinco de Mayo, celebrating Mexican heritage and culture.
On Friday, May 5, 2023, the San Diego Padres will be playing the Los Angeles Dodgers at 6 pm. And Petco Park will be celebrating Cinco de Mayo. The Padres will be wearing their new City Connect uniforms. The uniforms are an attempt to visually connect between the California and Baja cultures.
There will be a special pregame happy hour with drink specials and live music from the time the gate opens until the first pitch.
Petco Park is located in the heart of San Diego and the city is located just a 15 mile drive from the U.S./Mexico border. The local Mexican American community shapes San Diego culture.
There is such an abundance of Mexican influence to celebrate here. The concession stands are more interesting because of that influence. They sell hot dogs but they also sell Tijuana style bacon wrapped hot dogs which sound absolutely delicious. As do fish tacos, churros and carne asada fries.
Signature venues in the park like Barrio Dogg, Puesto and Holy Paleta are local but are heavily influenced by Mexican cuisine with Marias con leche paletas and blue corn tortillas. Mexican beer is prominently represented in the park as well as Cadillac Margaritas with Casa Noble tequila and La Fresca Michelada.
The Padres are the only MLB team with a Spanish name in honor of the Spanish priests, Father Junipero Serra and Don Caspar de Portola, who founded San Diego in 1769.\
