Since today is Juneteenth I found it fitting to talk about a great black history tour in the largest majority-black city in America. And that is the Stride Through History: 2-Hour African American Heritage Tour of Memphis, Tennessee!
The meeting point for this tour is B.B. King’s Blues Club on Beale Street in Downtown Memphis. It begins at 12:00 PM. The guide will be wearing a Memphis shirt and holding a clipboard that will have your last name on it.
Tour Itinerary
You begin by exploring the famous Beale Street. You’ll learn about its history and impact on African American culture and commerce in the late 19th and 20th centuries.
After that, you’ll head to Handy Park. You’ll learn about the history of Handy Park and its connection to both musicians and music fans.
The next stop on the tour is the Ida B. Wells Statue & Plaza. Your guide will tell you all about Ida B. Wells and her fight against racial injustice. You’ll learn about her contributions to civil rights and journalism.
Then the tour will make its way to Clayborn Temple. Your guide will tell you about the history of the temple and its connection to the Memphis Sanitation Strike of 1968.
The next stop will then be I AM A MAN Plaza. That’s where you’ll learn about the history of this Tennessee landmark as well as its connection to the civil rights movement.
The next stop is the National Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Motel. This, of course, is where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated on April 4, 1968. Please note admission to the museum is not included in the tour; you can purchase a museum ticket here.
The final place you visit on the tour is Tom Lee Park. You’ll learn both the history of the park and how it is used today. Then you’ll end the tour at the same place you started the tour: at the B.B. King’s Blues Club.
