Mexican Independence Day commemorates the day when Miguel Hidalgo, a Catholic priest, rang the church bells and called on Mexicans to rise up against the colonial government of Spain.  This speech ignited Mexico’s struggle for independence.  It is called “El Grito” or “The Cry of Independence” in Guanajuato, Mexico.

Father Hidalgo’s rebellion caused an 11 year war that led to Mexican independence in 1821.  Unfortunately, Father Hidalgo was captured  and executed before independence was achieved.
