Some of California’s best and most accessible snorkeling is in the La Jolla ecological reserve. It’s accessible from La Jolla Cove and La Jolla Shore. With an average depth of 20 feet, the 6,000 acres underwater will give you great views of native marine life. You’ll see the spectacular bright orange Garibaldi fish. They are California’s official state fish and a protected species.

Take a guided kayak and snorkeling tour. Mask, snorkel, fins and kayak will be provided. You can rent a wetsuit or a locker, if needed.

You’ll need to arrive a half hour before your tour departure time. You’ll get your equipment and a safety briefing.

Your knowledgeable guides will lead you and your group in your kayaks. Explore the fascinating La Jolla ecological reserve. You’ll also explore the area around the Seven Caves with a sea cliff. Six of the Seven Caves are accessible only by kayak.

Get amazing close up views of the sandstone formations. See beautiful sea cliffs as you paddle through the reserve. Glide to Sunny Jim’s Cave, the Arch Cave and more.

Your guides will lead you to the best spot for snorkeling. One of the guides will drop anchor and secure all the kayaks. Then it’s on with the mask, snorkel and fins and into the water you go! A guide will lead you snorkeling in the ecological reserve. He/she will point out the marine life as you swim along. You’ll have the opportunity to swim with La Jolla’s residents like bat rays, sea lions, Garibaldi fish (aka Catalina goldfish), shovel nose guitar fish and more. If you’re lucky, you might even get to swim with dolphins and sea turtles.

You’ll need to have swimwear. If motion sickness is a problem, motion sickness prevention medicine might be an option. If you are in a pair, you will be placed in a double kayak. No experience is needed for this tour, but you must be able to swim.
