The History of the Funhouse

If you are a regular reader of this blog, then you know our family loves history.  And I think the history of this funhouse is really interesting.

This current funhouse draws inspiration from the historic Toonerville Funhouse.

The Toonerville Funhouse was a part of two different eras of Santa Monica amusement park history:

  • Ocean Park Pier in the 1920s
  • Pacific Ocean Park in 1958

But over time, storms and renovations buried this once popular funhouse.

Or, at least that’s what they say.  There are rumors that unexplained incidents led to the shutdown, such as unexplained laughter during the afterhours, bizarre shadows, and props that disappeared.  Interestingly enough, the theme of the current funhouse includes Sprinkles the Clown, and there is a rumor that that was a real clown who mysteriously vanished during the last season of Toonerville Funhouse.

So when I say this is the Santa Monica Pier Haunted Funhouse, I may really mean the Santa Monica Pier Haunted Funhouse!

At any rate, the spirit of Toonerville Funhouse (however you want to interpret that) lives on in the brand new Funhouse at Pacific Park!

What to Expect at the Funhouse

I am pleased to say they went all out with this funhouse.  The 2,800-square-foot Funhouse has nine eerie chambers.  They use tricky layouts, optical illusions, and unexpected surprises to disorient and ultimately entertain guests.  Some of the fun parts of these nine rooms includes a mirror maze, a high wire balance act in an upside-down world, and a huge gumball machine guests crawl through.

The overall mood is more spooky fun than spooky entertaining.  It is meant to be something you can enjoy with kids.  And there are plenty of photo opportunities, too, adding to its overall casual atmosphere rather than intense fears you might find at say Universal Hollywood Horror Nights or Dark Harbor.

And while this experience is perfect for the spooky season, it is open year-round.

So now I’ll tell you how you can save money on our Funhouse ticket.  And this discount is not in the form of a promo code but is instead in the form of an automatic discount, which I think is much better (no dealing with typing in or cutting and pasting a code).

So you can find this discounted ticket here.  You can save 50% on Funhouse admission for two people.  This is a great way to save money on a visit to Pacific Park, whether you are visiting with your family, a date, friends, etc.
