Revere, Massachusetts Travel
Revere is a coastal city in Massachusetts located about 5 miles from downtown Boston. It was founded in 1846 as North Chelsea. In 1871, its name was changed to Revere to honor Paul Revere.
Revere is the oldest public beach in the country. From the beginning, it was the “peoples’ beach” and was visited by immigrants and working-class people. The beach, much of the seawall, amusement rides, businesses, and more were destroyed by the Great Blizzard of 1978. There was a major rebuilding effort by the city of Revere and the Massachusetts Department of Conservation & Recreation. Revere Beach was officially reopened in 1992. It now has a re-sanded beach, a restored boulevard, and restored pavilions.
The Revere Beach Reservation Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Revere Beach is over three miles long. It is great for swimming, surfing and water sports. It is wheelchair accessible. Easily accessed by the MBTA Blue Line from Boston. It has accommodated as many as a million visitors during the annual sand sculpture competition.
