Buda Castle is also known as the Royal Palace because this is where the Hungarian kings lived for centuries.  It is one of Budapest and Hungary’s most magnificent symbols.  Another famous symbol is the chain bridge which is linked to Buda Castle.

Buda Castle was originally constructed in 1265.  It was almost completely destroyed in the great siege of 1686 by allied Christian forces.  The castle we see today was constructed between  1749 and 1769.

You’ll enjoy incredible views of the city and the Danube River from the top of Varhegy Hill.

Your Gothic attired guide will tell you about the history of the castle and the Royal Family of Hungary.

Elizabeth Bastory

You’ll hear chilling stories of the dark history of Hungary.  You’ll hear about Elizabeth Bastory, known to history as the “bloody countess.”  She was a noblewoman and in 1610, she and four of her servants were arrested for the murder of over 600 young women.

Legends have it that she believed bathing in the blood of virgins would give her eternal youth.  Elizabeth Bastory is the most prolific female serial killer of all time.

Dracula

You’ll also hear about Dracula and the Buda Castle.  It is believed by many that Vlad Dracula was Bram Stoker’s inspiration for his Count Dracula.  Vlad was also known as Vlad the Impaler because he liked to impale his victims on stakes in the ground, leaving them to die there.

He was arrested by Matthias I,a political enemy, and was imprisoned in the labyrinth of Buda Castle.  He managed to get released and was killed in a battle with the Turks.  Vlad the Impaler is believed to have killed more than 80,000 people with most of them killed by impalement.

You’ll hear chilling stories of dark times in Budapest and Hungarian folk tales of vampires.
