The Palace of Versailles: Why It’s Important
The Palace of Versailles is the former French Royal residence and the center of government. It is located 10 miles from west southwest of Paris. Originally, it was a hunting lodge and private retreat for the French Royal family.
In 1661, Louis XIV had the lodge transformed into an extravagant and enormous palace with over 700 rooms, surrounded by beautiful French and English gardens. Every detail of the construction was intended to glorify the King. It served as a representation of the power of the Kings of France.
The most famous room in the Palace is the Hall of Mirrors. The gallery extends almost 240 feet and has over 300 mirrors and 17 large windows that overlook the gardens. The ornately painted ceiling has huge glass chandeliers. Gilded statues line the marble walls.
