The Palmer House opened in September, 1871. 13 days after its grand opening, it was destroyed in the Great Chicago Fire. It was rebuilt and reopened in November, 1873, and is the longest continually running hotel in the United States. In September of this year, Chicago Palmer House Hilton celebrated its 150th anniversary, a sesquicentennial celebration.
By the early 1900s, the Palmer House had become Chicago’s liveliest social center, having a long list of prominent guests, including every U.S. President since President Grant, Oscar Wilde and Charles Dickens, to name a few. The Empire Dining Room has hosted some of the nation’s top entertainers, including Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Harry Bellafonte, Judy Garland, Louis Armstrong, Liberace and more.
Palmer House Hilton is a member of the Historic Hotels of America, recognizing and celebrating the finest historic hotels in America.
Palmer House Hilton staff believe that you don’t stay at the Palmer House, rather you live at the Palmer House, no matter how short your stay may be. All their spacious rooms and suites feature just the right touches to make you feel at home.
