Celebrating Chinese New Year In Cleveland

The Lunar New Year  or Spring Festival and is known in the U.S. as Chinese New Year.  It begins on January 25, 2020, and lasts 15 days. This year is the Year of the Rat.  One of the most celebrated holidays in Asian culture, it is gaining in popularity in this country.  The New Year is celebrated with tasty symbolic foods, family reunions and time spent with friends. Here are some of the ways you can celebrate Chinese New Year in Cleveland.

Case Western Reserve University

Case Western Reserve University has a Lunar New Year celebration on Friday, January 24, 2020 at Tinkham Veale University Center.  The free festivities begin at 7pm with traditional Chinese dance performances followed by fireworks at 8pm.

Asia Plaza

Celebrate the Lunar New Year at Asia Plaza on Saturday, January 25, 2020.  The Kwan Family Lion Dance will start at 11am in Li Wah Restaurant and will move through the various businesses in Asia Plaza.  The lion symbolizes power and wisdom and is an important tradition to chase away evil spirits and bring prosperity and good luck for the new year.  Additional performances will feature the Ling Yun Rising Star Chinese Dancers, OCA Dragon Dance Shojoji Japanese dancers and more. Shop at various vendor tables and Asia Plaza gift shops and restaurants.  This event is open to all and is free.

You can ring in the Chinese New Year with Kwa Lion Dance at Li Wah inside Asia Plaza for the Year of the Rat.  The performances will be at 7pm on January 24, 25 and 26, 2020. Reservations are recommended.

Chinese Academy of Cleveland

The Chinese Academy of Cleveland will be performing the halftime show for the Cavaliers and Bulls game on January 25, 2020, at thee Rocket Mortgage Field House.  Get discount tickets for this Cavs game here.
