We’re well into April, and that means Cinco de Mayo is just around the corner.  And if you live in Detroit or are visiting Detroit, you are in for a treat.  After all, Detroit has a vibrant Mexican community, especially in southwest Detroit where you can find the vibrant Mexicantown neighborhood.  So it shouldn’t surprise you that Detroit, Michigan area has some wonderful Cinco de Mayo events this year.  We’ll go over the best 2023 Cinco de Mayo events in Detroit and around Detroit.

1. Cinco de Mayo Parade & Fiesta

The Mexican Patriotic Committee of Metropolitan Detroit is hosting the 58th Annual Cinco de Mayo Parade on Sunday, May 7, 2023.  It begins at noon and is a 2.2-mile parade.  The parade route starts around Springwells Street and will travel east along West Vernor.

But the partying doesn’t stop with the parade.  The partying takes place all weekend beginning with Cinco de Mayo, which falls on a Friday this year.  A cultural and musical fiesta will take place on W. Vernor and 21st Streets on Friday and Saturday from 12:00 PM to 7:00 PM.  You can read more about the parade and fiesta here.

2. Lucha Detroit – Cinco De Mayo Celebration

Lucha Detroit will be having a Cinco De Mayo Celebration at Garden Theater at Midtown on Friday, May 5, 2023.  You’ll get to see top Mexican talent (Mil Muertes, Aeroboy, and El Dragon) take on local wrestling stars: Michigan’s own Alex Shelley, Detroit legend N8 Mattson, and clash wrestling world heavyweight champ Ren Jones.  Oh, and you can also enjoy acrobats and tequila there.  So…yeah.  You’re going to want to go.  So buy your ticket here.

3. Karaoke Fiesta

You can also celebrate Cinco de Mayo in the NW Goldberg neighborhood of Detroit by attending Karaoke Fiesta.  This is a great event at Spotlight Park on Friday, May 5, 2023, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, so you can attend after work.

4. Cinco de Mile 5K Fun Run

This Cinco de Mayo, consider a Cinco de Mayo-themed run for a good cause.  The Cinco de Mile 5K Fun Run supports Mental Health Awareness.  It takes place from 5:30 PM 8:00 PM so you can do it after work.    You’ll take 3 laps around the perimeter of Clark Park.  This run is both kid-friendly and pet-friendly.  You can find out more information about the run here.

5. Cinco De Mayo Music Fest 2023

Over at Blind Pig in nearby Ann Arbor, you can enjoy some great music this year on Cinco de Mayo at the Cinco De Mayo Music Fest.

This music festival includes great talent like Icarus Fell, Gangway, Mr. Cool, Suicidal Fish, Earth Below Us, and Walking Down Main.

Bonus Activity: Mexicantown Restaurants

And finally, instead of one of these events, you could also consider visiting one of Mexicantown’s great Mexican restaurants such as Armando’s, El Asador Steakhouse, and Palenque Restaurant.
