Calling all martini lovers! There’s an event coming to the Windy City that you are absolutely going to love. Chicago Martini Fest is coming to the Hubbard Inn on Saturday, May 13, 2023, from 4 pm to 9 pm.
When it comes to classic cocktails, the martini is a fan favorite. It’s an elegant drink that can be customized to make sure it’s never boring.
Martinis are made with gin or vodka. Gin martinis have been considered to be the classic martini, but vodka martinis have really gained in popularity.
Whether you want a dry, perfect or wet martini depends on the ratio of dry or sweet vermouth. The classic wet martini is when you prefer an equal ratio of gin and dry vermouth. A perfect martini is made with equal parts of dry and sweet vermouth and then mixed with gin or vodka. A dry martini is made with less dry vermouth.
Martinis are made with only clear liquids. A “dirty” martini will have a splash of olive juice which makes it savory and no longer clear.
A shaken martini will be placed in a cocktail shaker with ice, shaken and then poured through a strainer into a glass. Small pieces of ice may end up in your glass. Stirred means placing the martini into the cocktail shaker with ice and gently stirring and straining it into the glass. They are smoother and not at all diluted.
A straight up martini is served in a martini glass with no ice. An on the rocks martini is served in a tumbler over ice.
Classic martinis are served with an olive or three olives on a skewer. A martini with an even number of olives is considered to be very bad luck, comparable to having a black cat cross your path. With a twist means your martini will have a piece of lemon rind, giving it a bit of a citrusy taste.
So you can see there’s a lot to learn about martinis. And at the Chicago Martini Fest, you can watch mixologists hand craft the different martinis. And you get to sample them which is way more fun! And fun is what you’re sure to have at this great fest!
