Hamilton is, of course, the hit musical by Lin-Manuel Miranda that has taken Broadway by storm since it debuted in 2015. It not only won multiple Tony awards but even won a Pulitzer Prize! The show uses hip-hop, R&B, pop, soul, and traditional-style show tunes to tell the story of American Founding Father Alexander Hamilton.
Wicked
Wicked is one of my favorite musicals of all time. It debuted back in 2003 and it’s been hard to get a ticket ever since. In fact, the first time I went to see this musical, my family had to split up among rows because we couldn’t find a seat together. But it was so worth it! What has always stood out to me about this musical is that it’s not just great music and staging (though it definitely has that) but the story’s really good, too.
The Lion King
The Lion King debuted back in 1997 and has been going strong ever since. The best way I can describe it is that it is almost more of an experience than a musical. The musical features the plot and music from the very popular Disney animated classic but presents it in such an amazing way with the use of actors in animal costumes and giant puppets.
Aladdin
Here’s another popular Disney animated classic that was made into a musical. It only debuted back in 2011 but it quickly became one of the top ten highest-grossing musicals of all time.
MJ
Who doesn’t love the music of Michael Jackson? Well, you’ll hear it when you see MJ. It’s a jukebox musical featuring Michael Jackson’s music that tells the story of Michael Jackson. This musical has been a commercial success since it debuted in 2021 and it received multiple Tony awards.
Six
Six is a British musical comedy that made its way across the pond and debuted on Broadway in 2021. It is a modern retelling of the lives of the six wives of Henry VIII. A creative and unique aspect of the musical is that it is presented as a pop concert. The Queens take turns singing and telling their story to see who suffered the most due to Henry and should, because of this, of course, become the group’s lead singer.
