Come explore 12 rooms of terror at the Haunted Mayfield Manor. It is named for 19th century physician Dr. Horace Mayfield. It is said Dr. Mayfield practiced psychiatric experiments on unwilling patients. Rumor has it that Dr. Mayfield even kept the bodies of the dead within the manor house.
The Great Storm of 1900 was the deadliest natural disaster in American history. On the night of September 8, a category 4 hurricane demolished Galveston. Great waves crashed on the beach. The city was 15 feet underwater at one point in time. Wind gusts were between 120 and 135 miles per hour, destroying more than 3,600 buildings. The death toll in Galveston was between 6,000 and 8,000 people.
The Mayfield Manor is in the Butternut Building which withstood the hurricane and was used as a morgue, holding thousands of victims.
The legend of Dr. Mayfield has him losing his fiance and his family to the hurricane. The storm also destroyed his work and his sanity. Charged with supervising the makeshift morgue, he continued with his experiments.
Is there any truth to the legend of Dr. Mayfield? It makes for a great spooky tale, but there’s no proof that it’s true.
Is Mayfield really haunted? There are those who believe it is. Things occurred during the construction of the Manor that had no reasonable explanations. They welcomed paranormal investigators and many have come to investigate. The owner of the building says it isn’t haunted. Many others believe it is. Come see for yourself.
