Have you noticed something different about the courts at Capital One Arena when the Washington Wizards play? Well, you’re not going crazy; it is different. See, back on November 10, 2022, the Washington Wizards debuted a new court.
The new court pays homage to the city’s iconic cherry blossoms. Cherry blossoms of course have been special to Washington, D.C. ever since the Mayor of Tokyo gifted the United States with 3,000 cherry trees as a gift of friendship between the Japanese and American people. Now every year around April, cherry trees bloom around the Tidal Basin in Washington, DC.
The color of the paint on the court is now a cherry blossom pink rather than the typical red. There is also a cherry tree at the center court and there are several designs of blossoms around the perimeter of the edges of the court. You can get a good glimpse of the blossoms by looking under the players’ feet when they are sitting on the bench.
But that’s not all. The Wizards have also debuted new City Edition cherry blossom jerseys! They are shaded to cherry blossom pink. The uniforms also incorporate a tidal basin shade of blue. You can purchase the jerseys here. You can also get City Edition cherry blossom ball caps and other items.
The Wizards first wore these special City Edition cherry blossom jerseys against the Dallas Mavericks on November 10th. They also wore them when they played the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday, December 4th. And they will wear the new uniforms again on December 12th, when they play at home against the Brooklyn Nets.
And this won’t just be any game. It will be the Washington Wizards’ Japanese Heritage Night Game! This should be a special night. Especially if you are one of the first fans to arrive. The first 7,500 fans get to take home a City Edition Cherry Blossom-inspired tote bag!
