Discover the beauty of the Big Island on this 5 hour tour from Hilo. Visit Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Lili’uokalani Park & Gardens, Rainbow Falls and Big Island Candies.
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park stretches from sea level more than 13,000 feet. The park has two of the world’s most active volcanoes, Mauna Loa and Kalauea. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a designated Biosphere Reserve Crater Rim Drive.
You will see some of the most unusual geological, biological and historically sacred sites in the world. You’ll know you’re not in Kansas anymore when you see recent lava flows stretching out in a rocky wasteland. If the timing is right, you can watch nature’s fireworks show of lava pouring into the ocean.
You’ll visit Crater Rim lookout and the Halema’uma’u Crater Overlook. Explore Thurston Lava Tube. You’ll see Hawaiian nene (geese) and other rare animals and plants plus volcanic steam vents.
Lili’uokalani Park & Gardens
You’ll visit Lili’uokalani Park & Gardens. This is the largest ornamental Japanese garden outside of Japan. It’s named after Hawaii’s last reigning monarch, Queen Lili’uokalani.
The Garden was dedicated in 1917 as a tribute to Hawaii’s first Japanese immigrants who worked in Hawaii’s sugar cane fields. You’ll see rock gardens, arching bridges over fishponds, pagodas, a teahouse and Japanese stone lanterns. Adding to the beauty of the setting are views of Hilo Bay and Coconut Island.
Rainbow Falls
Legend has it that these falls are home to Hina, the ancient Hawaiian goddess of the moon. The Rainbow Falls flow 80 feet over a lava cave.
Rainbows are caused by the reflection, refraction and dispersion of light in water droplets in the mist that surrounds the falls. Stand with your back towards the sun or any source of light to see the rainbows.
This tour will take you through Historic Downtown Hilo and you’ll drive by the Kamehameha Statue. Your last visit will be a sweet one at the Big Island Candies.
