I grew up in South Portland, Maine. In 1953 I was 9 years old. My parents had been looking to buy lakefront property to build a summer place for the family when they finally settled on property at the head of Little Sebago Lake. It was a nice piece of land with trees to be cleared, and wet spots to be filled. The plan was to clear the land first and then build the first section of the summer camp. The next year my father took my brother and I to Freeport, Maine to LL Bean to buy boots. At that time LL Bean was in one store. Over the next twenty years or so our summer place grew by adding to the first structure, but nowhere near the at the rate of LL Bean.
L.L. Bean was founded in 1912 by its namesake, hunter and fisherman, Leon Leonwood Bean. Bean had developed a waterproof boot, which is a combination of leather uppers and rubber bottoms that he sold to hunters. Over time Bean’s product line grew. The company now sells a variety of hiking, weather, and other utility boots, along with other outdoor equipment such as firearms, backpacks, and tents, in addition to producing a full line of clothing. Initially sales were through the catalogue business. The catalogue was later dropped. The main store in Freeport is open 7 Days a Week, 24 Hours a day.
