Atlantic, New Jersey is a popular travel destination every summer. The city is famous for its boardwalk, casinos, and beach. But did you know that Atlantic City is also home to one of the country’s oldest lighthouses?
Yes, the Absecon Lighthouse has been guarding New Jersey for over 150 years. It first lit up Atlantic City back in 1857 and continued helping ships to safe passage for many years. In 1999, Absecon Lighthouse became open to the public. Its current role in Atlantic City is as a museum and educational center.
And getting up to the top of the lighthouse isn’t an easy task. After all, at 171 feet tall, the Absecon Lighthouse is the tallest lighthouse in New Jersey and the third tallest lighthouse in the United States of America. Its spiral staircase has 228 steps you have to climb to get to the top of the lighthouse.
But once you are there, the climb will have been worth it. You’ll get amazing views of the Atlantic City skyline and the coastline. And you’ll get to see the original first-order Fresnel Lens, which was first lit in 1857.
There’s more to see beyond the lighthouse, too. A recent multi-million dollar restoration included adding an amazing replica of the original Lightkeeper’s dwellings. There’s also an educational museum and a gift shop.
Visiting the Absecon Lighthouse is an enjoyable experience not only for its views but as a great lesson in history. It is a wonderful activity to add to any Atlantic City vacation. It’s a great activity for adults and kids, though be aware that this may be too hard of a walk for the youngest guests.
