Galveston is the birthplace of Juneteenth.  We’re going to tell you all about this year’s Juneteenth celebrations and then we’ll tell you about how you can save money on a visit to Galveston.

On June 19, 1865. Union Major General Gordon Granger landed at Ashton Villa.  He read the order declaring that “all slaves are free.”  That day ended slavery in the last Confederate state.

The 2026 Galveston Juneteenth commemorates the 161st anniversary of that day’s events.  It will be happening on June 19, 20 and 21, 2026.  Most celebrations are free and open to the public.  There are several Juneteenth festivals.  You can expect live entertainment, vendors consisting of Black owned businesses, history exhibitor living history performances.  The goal of these events is to gather information, remember and celebrate freedom together.   

Juneteenth Events In Galveston

  • Galveston Island Juneteenth Festival & Celebration – This is a free family friendly event at the birthplace of Juneteenth. It will be happening at Menard Park on June 19, 2026. It will feature live music, vendors and community programming.
  • Juneteenth: The Galveston Story M6 3D Screening – This is a 45 minute film in the M6 3D Theater in Moody Gardens. It will be happening on June 19, 2026, with showtimes at 2:10 pm and 3:40 pm. This powerful commentary traces the events of Juneteenth and why keeping this history alive mattered for every generation. Pricing is $4 per person.
  • Kam Franklin Live at St. Joseph’s Galveston Juneteenth 2026 – Kam Franklin is the frontwoman of The Suffers and an established Houston/Galveston music institution. This performance will be at St. Joseph’s on Saturday, June 13, 2026, at 7 pm. It is part of the Galveston Historical Foundation’s Juneteenth 2026 programming. Pricing is $35 per person.
  • Galveston Underground Railroad & Buffalo Soldiers Living History 2026 – This will be happening on June 17, 2026, from 10 am to 2 pm on the grounds of the historic Menard House. This is part of the Galveston Historical Foundation’s Juneteenth 2026 programming. Reenactors will portray members of the 9th and 10th Cavalry regiments. They will share stories of Black military service alongside the Underground Railroad. Admission is free.
  • Juneteenth Proclamation Reading at Ashton Villa – This is the annual reading and ceremony commemorating the General Orders at the historic Ashton Villa on June 19, 2026. Admission is free.
  • Emancipation March & Service at Reedy Chapel AME – Reedy Chapel is the site of early Juneteenth observances. The march will be from the Galveston County Courthouse to Reedy Chapel. Admission is free.
  • Movies in the Park: Hidden Figures Galveston Juneteenth 2026 – See “Hidden Figures” at Menard Park on Saturday, June 20, 2026, at dusk. It is a film paying tribute to the Black women mathematicians of NASA as part of Juneteenth 2026 programming.  Bring blankets or lawn chairsAdmission is free.
  • Art Gallery – Juneteenth Headquarters & Art Gallery in Galveston has rotating exhibitions and programming commemorating freedom on the holiday’s birthplace.  It will be happening on June 19, 2026, and admission is free.
